In this case an article on a modern harbour fireboat was chanced upon and seemed to be just what I was looking for. The full size vessel employed a Voith Schneider drive which did not appeal to me as it has always seemed too complex to make and the commercial model units look rather expensive. Add the risk of damage when sailing in our flotsam filled waters plus the rubble and rubbish around the edges, so I'll stick with water screws and maybe the occasional paddle wheel!

The feature which caught my imagination on the fireboat was the elevating and rotating platform that carried one of the monitors. The full size vessel used hydraulics to raise and lower this platform, but I reasoned that surely a servo could do the same? This was followed by a period of endless sketching, screwing up and discarding the paper, then repeating again. What appeared to be a simple mechanism, two pairs of arms to operate concertina style, proved to be difficult to reduce to an easily built item for a model

Thank you for looking
