By W. H. BUTLER

BACK in 1880-90, the Laconia Car Co. working two full shifts, was still five or six months behind in their production of narrow gauge coaches. 'Hundreds were being turned out for many 3-ft. gauge lines all over the country.

The 1880 style had round-top etched glass windows with paneled sides, while later models were of a more conventional design. Prototypes were built for the Boston Revere Beach & Lynn RR, seeing service until 1928 and being used as electric cars until 1940. Cars similar to these may still be seen on the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina, the East Broad Top and the Hawaiian Rlc. They are also seen with minor variations on practically all remaining narrow gauges.

With the exception of a vise and few drills for your metal work, no tools are required other than the 'usual knife, razor blades, sandpaper, etc. Plexiglas, now available in many hardware and glass supply stores, is utilized for the sides, while balsa makes up much of the remainder of the car except where stronger material is required.
