by DAVID MANN

THIS STALWART amphibious truck model came from the desire to build something completely different to anything already in the local model club. Searching through the MAP plan books for inspiration, I spotted a couple of amphibious vehicle plans. These; seemed a little too simple but were on the right,

lines, so I contacted the British Army via the' local recruiting office in order to find a prototype that was a little more challenging. The recruiting officers were very helpful and after some discussion and searching the full size Stalwart was selected. As the construction and operation of the full size vehicle is rather complicated the model copies the appearance but not the structure of the original.

Construction

The original model's body (or hull if you prefer) was built from ¼ in. balsa skinned on the outside from 1 mm plywood. Any of the epoxy adhesives are ideal for this job, my own preference is for the five-minute variety, which is more expensive but less taxing to my Once the basic hull was finished I coated the inside of the model with glass fibre resin to help seal the balsa and improve the strength. Externally the hull is given a coat of wood primer and sealer, while all the edges are reinforced with thin glass fibre mat.

Ashore and afloat

When the Stalwart was first checked in the water it was discovered that driving the model from land into the water and vice- versa can only be achieved if the water's edge is gently shelving. I found it necessary to built a portable ramp as my local pond has steep edges. This is certainly an important feature, for any spectators around obviously enjoy watching the Stalwart throwing itself in and out of the water. Developing this model has given me a great deal of pleasure and has proved to be an enjoyable model to operate. I hope you get as much fun from' yours.
