By Walter Musciano

Our model was built to the scale of 1" = I' .One of the most interesting events sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics. The basic requirements are that the model be replica of a U.S. Navy airplane and that it have a hook to arrest itself on a 40' model of an airplane carrier that is fitted with cord lines across its deck. The event is also judged on the difference between the highest and the lowest speeds that a model can attain. This means varied engine speed, and the way this is controlled is by sliding covers over the engine intake or exhaust ports. As the ports are covered, the engine will slow down.

Operating the carrier hook and varying the speed of the engine require more than single or even double-line controls. One method is to use insulated flying wires and to operate other items with electrical impulses, but this necessitates batteries, servo motors, and/or solenoids, which become overly complex and are of questionable reliability. The most positive means of auxiliary control is a direct mechanical system with a third line. The J. Roberts control handle and "Flight Master" bellcrank are recommended and have been illustrated on the plans
