CONSTRUCTION

With almost flat sides running for much of the hull length, a fully bread-and-buttered hull is not necessary.

Our prototype, Bardic Ferry, was built by William Denny & Bros., Ltd., Dumbarton, and launched in 1957. A sister, Ionic Ferry, followed in 1958; the owners have recently ordered another pair, similar in most respects, but slightly longer. Our plans have been prepared with the kind cooperation of the Atlantic Steam aviation Co. Ltd., from general arrangement drawings of the actual ship, plus photographs of her under construction.

The prototype is 338 ft. long overall, 326 ft. on the waterline, with a beam of 52 ft. 6 in. Draught is approximately 12 ft. 6 in. with a 1,320 ton  load, which brings the vehicle deck to within 3 ft. 6 in. of the water. Gross tonnage is 2,550. She is fitted with Denny Brown stabilizers and has a speed of 141 knots. Designed specifically for her job, the hull is a little unusual in shape, merging from a conventional bow into virtually a hard chine aft, with a very fiat transom-style stern, most of which is the ramp door.

She carries 19 goods containers, 2 commercial vans and 3 private cars on her upper deck, the 20 ton electric crane being used for these, and 48 lorries, etc., and 10 private cars on the vehicle deck, a total of 82 vehicles and containers. Accommodation is' provided for 17 first-class and 38 second-class passengers, and the crew totals 49.
