The miniature Stonewall Jackson employs two basic concepts —simplicity and strength with maximum performance at minimum cost.

    The maximum exterior hull dimensions were chosen to match the 41/2-inch-diameter tube which comprises the major portion of the hull. Exclusive of the fins and thrust bearing, the hull is comprised of four parts: the hollow conning tower, the two conical ends and the center tube.

    The hull is designed to change the buoyancy from 21 to 23 lbs., depending on how much buoyancy is needed to match the builder's waterline. This is done by adding flotation Styrofoam to the rear conical section

   The launching of the USS Lafayette (SSB[N]-616) signaled the beginning of a new class of Polaris submarine, larger, heavier and employing the A-3 Polaris missile for more firepower. On 26 August 1964, an even more sophisticated weapons system was launched—the USS Stonewall Jackson (SSB [N]- 634).
