by WILLIAM DUNWOODY

The Hook originated as an attempt to make an eye-catching model of the same force set-up as a previous "beast." The "beast" in this case was a semi-high-thrust-line model of absolutely square lines. Except for the wing ribs, there wasn't a curve on the whole air- plane. The Hook, as the photographs and drawings reveal, is about as different as possible, with only the minimum number of straight lines. Adding curves to the model didn't cut down on the performance either, and the weight of the Hook is more than one ounce less than the "square" model. The model in the photographs  is the second Hook the author has built. The first model started out with a polyhedral stabilizer which was abandoned in favor of the flat stabilizer shown. The only changes made between the two models were in the stabilizer saddle (to permit the use of a dethermalizer) and engine mount (the original ship had a cowl around the crankcase and a spinner).

Construction,

While unorthodox, is easy and, if wood is properly selected, is very strong. Wood throughout should be medium hard balsa with the straightest possible grain.
