 THOUGH photos of working model R/C Pedalos have appeared on a number of occasions, no drawings have been published, as far as is known. These craft are a standard part of the scene at Mediterranean holiday resorts, and have been used in this country. They have the advantage, for hire craft, of requiring no skill or experience. There appear to be two basic types, driven either by a concealed paddle wheel or by a propeller, in either case powered through shafting or chain from two sets of bicycle-style pedals. The paddle type makes concealment of the radio easier, and this was therefore Chosen. Two hollow boxes at float level, between Floats and paddle box, and a false floor under the Pedals enable the radio to be carried out of sight; the Seats hinge forward for access to the 6v accumulator And rudder actuator. The centre boxes add to the Total buoyancy, of course, and are invisible when the Model is afloat. Futaba single-channel radio is fitted, with two actuators and a switcher unit, giving altogether seven Functions - pedal forward, left, right, or backwards, Left, right, and stop. Two purchased 12in. 'Teen-age' dolls were modified To have hinged knee and hip joints, and dresses long Enough to hide the knee joints were made. The seats Are plastic foam-covered, upholstered with yellow Leather cloth, and piped with nylon string. Colours are Yellow and white, red below water, with red handles, Etc. Motor is a Monoperm Super with Richard 6-speed Gearbox, and drive to the pedals is by Meccano Worm and wheel. The paddle wheel is made from 18g. Aluminium. Speed is sedate and lifelike; the Model doesn't exactly race about!
