THIS IS NOT A BEGINNERS PROJECT
by Frank Johnson
Build by Mike Sriver
For basic hull construction of his 52 ½” Coast Guard Utility Boat model, Mike Sriver began with 1/8" and 1/4" bulkheads of marine ply mahogany connected by spruce stringers. Planking the outer hull was accomplished using 1/8" thick marine ply once again, only here it was cut into 1/2" wide strips. One 4 x 8' sheet of ply was used in the construction with very little left over.
The boat moves very well, too fast for scale speed, but, as he puts it, "It's a lot of fun, anyway!" Some of the action shots contained herein should give you an idea of just how well the boat does move.
