Becoming rather bored over the Christmas holidays was the spur to put an idea I had been toying with into practice. This was to see if a fast electric model using a surface piercing prop could be built into a conventional mono-hull without using a commercial outdrive unit, the aim being to make the model from as many conventional parts as possible and so perhaps encourage more people to try these models.

The final draft design had the usual prop shaft and tube, but emerging from the transom rather than under the model. The prop was placed just aft of the transom, this being much closer to the hull than is normal practice. A gear reduction was essential to cope with the large coarse pitch props needed for surface piercing operation. I did once try direct drive to such a prop; this gave a fast model but a very short battery life and a very hot motor!

THANK YOU FOR LOOKING
