O GAUGE TROLLEY
WIDTH 2 3/8”
By WILLIAM SCHOPP
ON a real electric line the need for a portable substation arises when seasonal or unexpected power demands 'overtax existing substation facilities. A certain line may require power enough for an unusual number of trolleys only during the week when the County Fair is held or during the summer months when the Wonderland Amusement Park is open. Heavy war-time traffic requiring twenty-minute instead of the old one hour headway between cars is too much for the former set-up of substations and, new electrical equipment not being available, portable subs are required if they happen to be lying around in the yards. A regular substation may be out of service temporarily: a portable sub is hooked in and traffic is maintained. On some lines, portable substations are used instead of "permanent" ones.
