MODEL BUILT BY A. PALMER
IN introducing this one-tenth scale model of Bluebottle, the Dragon Class yacht built for Her Majesty the Queen and H.R.H.The Duke of Edinburgh by Messrs Camper and Nicholson in their yards at Gosport, we should make it quite plain that, while capable of interesting sailing, it is not a model racing yacht in the accepted sense of the word. We have compromised to some extent in having her fitted with typical model racing sails, but she comes within no accepted model racing class and should be regarded entirely as a yacht to be built for pleasure sailing.
Deck fittings it will be noted have followed full-size practice by the incorporation of such gear as Genoa and runner winches, boom crutch, fairleads etc. There is no reason why the model yachtsman should not, if preferred, omit these, and install instead Braine or Vane gear, and the usual racing yacht fittings, and even increase keel weight above the small amount of 11/2 lbs. specified in our design.
On the other hand, for those who would like even more verisimilitude, we would add that Bluebottle has a blue mainsail in her wardrobe, along with others of the usual white. Her registered number is K.192 stencilled below the class letter D. When racing the yacht carries the Royal racing flag, which is a pennant with a gold monogram of E and P entwined on a dark blue ground. When not racing the yacht carries the burgee of the club she is visiting, or which is holding the regatta, with a red ensign flown at the stern on a small ensign staff.
Building Instructions
The building board consists of two pieces of deal 38 in. X 4 in. X 3/4 in joined together to form a "Tee" section girder. Mark on this the lines for the mould positions. Moulds are cut from 1/4 in. ply (except No. l4a which is of * in. mahogany and left well oversize to allow for fairing in). The ply moulds are cut vertically on the centre line and joined by screwing on a piece of 1/2 in. square stock which serves to hold the moulds vertically on the building board.
