Satisfying both in the making and on the mantel, this gleaming brass model of a 19th Century cannon is a fine project for winter evenings. The one pictured in the photos and plans on the facing page was carefully scaled from a real artillery piece of the Civil War. (Pictured above, both assembled and broken down, are similar models executed in different scales.) A metal-turning lathe is the only essential power tool; a drill press and a miller are useful but not indispensable.
