The Joffre was quite a large tug for her day as single screw tugs went, 115ftb.p. x 26 ft. beam mld., and a draught of 8ft. forward and 13ft. aft. She was very powerful for a single screw tug having a 1200 ihp. engine made by Kincaid's of Greenock giving her a speed of 12kts. She was rated by Lloyds as an ocean-going tug and 150 tons of coal in her bunkers gave her range. She was equipped with electric light throughout. She had two hooks, one in the usual position amidships, the other aft for ocean towing work. She changed her appearance several times. Under the Lawson ownership her funnel was light ochre with a black top and a black diamond.
