   Although the naval trawlers were classified as Strath, Mersey and Castle, there were differences between vessels in the same class. The trawler in the drawing represents the Benjamin Coleman, John Corwarder and Thomas Collard, named after men whose names appeared on the muster role of the Victory and the Royal Sovereign at the battle of Trafalgar. These trawlers had the gun mounted behind the funnel, other Straths had the gun forward above the fish hatches. It seems strange that although built for naval use, these vessels were fully equipped for trawling, even as far as having the slotted supports for the boards which formed the fish pounds. It can't have been easy to run to battle stations with all those obstacles on the deck.

This group of trawlers was built by Fleming and Ferguson of Paisley to the dimensions of 115.8ft x 22.2ft x 12.1ft. To a scale of 1/4in =1ft the model will be 301/2in long x 5iin beam and with a mean draught of 21/2-in should weigh about 81b.

   Trawlers and drifters were used by the Navy in a wider range of roles than those for which they had been employed in the previous conflict : Balloon Barrage Vessel, Mine Recovery Vessel, Mine Sweeper, Submarine Tender, Mobile Wiping Unit (de-gaussing), Auxiliary Patrol, Dan Layer, Wreck dispersal, Kite Balloon Vessel, Antisubmarine Patrol, Torpedo Recovery, Water Carrier, Examination Vessel, Boom Defence Gate Vessel, Harbour Defence Patrol Vessel.
