DESIGN AND LAYOUT, GRAHAM GOODCHILD.

Introduction

Action Sub is a near scale submersible, bearing no relation to any full-size counterpart. However the model is a fully functioning practical machine that will perform realistically under three-function radio control.

The radio, batteries and servo's are housed in a self-seal plastic box, slung under the body. Propulsion is by two Mabuchi HRS385S motors housed in pods under each wing. The motors also steer the model in tank fashion. Dive and ascent control is by a pair of forward mounted pivoting planes which rely on forward speed to be effective. The planes are linked to a scale moving control column via a servo.

The frogman can be any suitable posable figure of up to 12in. tall. An Action Man was used on the prototype model, which when set up correctly will move in relation to the control column. All the body parts are made from 3/16in. x 4in. wide sheet balsa. To save on cutting the width of the body base, wings and hood are drawn at 4in. wide. Four sheets will be required, together with items of piano wire, brass tubing, alloy sheet, etc.

The two ducted propeller nozzles are made from card document tubes, although plastic pipe can be used.
