THE era of the British Battleship has passed and memory of these ocean giants may only be perpetuated by models and photographs. Such names as Nelson, Rodney, Royal Sovereign, Anson and Howe will always be "battleship names" and will never really suit the modern naval vessel of the nuclear age.
H.M.S. Hornblower is not a replica of any particular battleship. It is designed specifically as a working model yet it retains the features associated with a British Man of War.
Naval vessels are always popular subjects for the model maker. However, the design of such a model requires careful consideration. The amount of detail to be incorporated in the model must be decided; this in turn depends upon the scale to which the model is built, and of course the scale depends upon the size and type of model required. The model featured in these notes is 28 in. long and represents a battleship about 650 ft. long and some 30,000 tons displacement. Thus, guard rails, small armament, ventilators etc. would require almost microscopic model work. Since a working model is to be made then such fine detail would almost be invisible when the vessel is out in the pond—to say nothing of probable damage to delicate detail in transit. H.M.S. Hornblower only incorporates the main components which create the impression of a battleship.
