THE annual off-shore power boat race on the south coast of England has grown in three or four years to be one of the major events in the nautical season. Originally the boats entered were cabin cruisers and similar production boats, often fitted with powerful engines but, in general, standard in design and construction. One of the objects of the race is to encourage experiment in design and power plants with the intention of improving small power craft generally, and the number of specially built boats entered in the race has steadily grown. Possibly these boats are in themselves of little practical value for the average small boat owner, but the lessons learnt from both design and construction aspects will ultimately benefit all the boating fraternity in just the same way as Grand Prix cars bring progress for the average family saloon.
In the last two years a definite type of boat has become almost standard; a low fore-cabin and a fairly roomy after cockpit, with a flying screen, fitted to a fairly deeply V-ed hull typifies the style which has evolved. It -is on this conception of these racing craft that Suzie Q is based and although we have retained the V-ed hull, the reverse sheer and the low coach-house which are so characteristic, the lines have been slightly simplified to make for easier construction.
With the average modeller in mind, we have elected to draw the model at a length of 27 in. which approximates to ¾ in. to 1 ft. scale. The hull lends itself to electric propulsion, but no doubt at least half the prospective builders will wish to install a diesel or glow motor. The plan therefore shows alternative methods of construction using all balsa, all ply, or a combination of both. No actual motor mounting is included in the drawing since so wide a range of motors can be fitted and any of the customary installations can be employed.
