Introduction

They say that small is beautiful. I don't know about that, but I do know it can be very practical in certain circumstances. This came to mind as I watched my young daughter playing with a clockwork fish in her outdoor paddling pool. No, I'm not going to show you how to build a clockwork fish, though I decided it would make an interesting project to build a simple model which was small enough to be used in the garden pond or paddling pool, and which also could be radio controlled.

My aim was to design a boat under 8 inches long with good maneuverability. Speed was not important, as a slow boat was preferable for the conditions it would be used in.

A conventional drive shaft arrangement for propulsion was out of the question because this takes up too much space. The answer was a small electric outboard motor which could be adapted to be steered directly from a standard servo. Besides the advantage of compactness, outboards also offer good directional control.
