Radio Control

By J. W. Thompson

THIS model is based on the   which been highly successful in the Paris 6-hour races, and is of a size to provide a reasonably high performance yet comparatively docile model with a 5 c.c. motor. No doubt it would accept something quite a bit larger with only the necessity for strengthening in one or two places (e.g. 1/16 in. ply in place of 1/32 in.) and more careful trimming.

As a glance at the cross-sections will show, the design almost falls into the catamaran category, the wide central hull having a gently curved bottom which cuts sharply down to a pair of keels, outboard of which is a split deep-V section. Normally the boat is riding on its centre, the V parts only coming into use on turns or in rough water.

Construction is straightforward. Cut all basic hull parts and assemble egg-box fashion;

The original carries a driver, without which the boat doesn't look quite right. This can be made from one of the 'dolls for boys'  Tommy, or Action Man, either of which should be fitted with an Action Man helmet and the top of a wet suit. Less expensive drivers can no doubt be found.

All-up weight of the prototype, with ED Viking engine and four-channel radio, came out at 81/2 lbs., a little more than expected. On the other hand, performance was also better than expected!
