By Ian R. Stair

The Hoy illustrated was one of these used on the Thames and the East Coast for carrying goods to and from' larger ships in the river and between the many small towns on the coast and the London River.

They were also used for passenger carrying, a popular route being between London and Margate. This journey took about twelve hours m favourable conditions but it could take a few days with adverse winds. These passenger Hoys usually had a smaller main hatch than the one on the drawing. The cabin aft might have had a skylight on a well appointed vessel! After the railways were developed the passenger trade was finished but the Hoys continued trading until the middle of the 19th century.

The Hoy was a bluff-bowed vessel, a bit finer aft, and the stern finished with the curious projection which is also found in the Herring Busses of. the same period. This stout hull gave a safe ship but not one which was easy to manage.
