Length 53 3/4 in
Beam 8 5/8
Suitable for Radio Control
by A. C. LAWRENCE
The full-size plan is to a scale of 1/4 in. = 1 ft. which gives a model 53 3/4 in. long with an 8 5/8 in. beam. The depth below the waterline is some 41/2 in. which should give a displacement of 35 to 45 lb., enough for any form of propulsion and control. A three-quarter size model should prove equally attractive for those who do not fancy a large model.
THE trawlers of Messrs. Hellger Bros. of Hull are all named after Shakespearian ladies, so when a new trawler Portia was commissioned in October 1956 there was nothing remarkable about her name. But Portia was a remarkable ship, for she could claim distinction as Britain's largest and fastest trawler. She was a graceful 2101 ft. in length, with a beam of 341 ft. and a speed of 15 knots when fully loaded. The introduction of diesel-electric propulsion instead of traditional steam plant accounted for Portia's splendid performance, while careful design enabled her to set new standards for seaworthiness and crew comfort.
