There is something rather enjoyable in squirting water, whether it is a waterpistol or a fire-hydrant. I was thinking along these lines one summer's evening in 1983 at the canoe lake in Portsmouth. On the water was a Wesel fireboat and a Dusseldorf fireboat having a cat and dog fight with their water monitors, occasionally one of them would get in a squirt at the watching crowd to everyone's amusement. It was then I decided my next boat would have some form of water equipment. I like to scratchbuild so I started looking around at all the local boats with fire fighting equipment. There was quite a selection, mainly tugs based at the Fawley Oil Refinery but as so often the answer was under my nose — why not the Southampton Fire Boat, which is on standby at Southampton Town Quay. I had walked past Fireboat 39 hundreds of times, not paying her much attention, so it was time to take a good look. I realised that she is a very stylish, purposeful workboat with plenty of colour. Fireboat 39 is operated by the Hampshire Fire Brigade Dock Station and is on 24 hours call. She is manned by the regular fire officers who have extra training for boat service. The boat is 65ft. long by 14ft. wide with a gross tonnage of 38 tons. The power plant is two Rolls Royce C6SFLM diesels which drive the twin screws and the two Solent water pumping units. The coxwain can control the water to the three monitors and the two-deck delivery heads as well as controlling the boat's position with the propellers. She also has the ability to pump out other craft at the same time as firefighting.
