The history of the boat began in 1913 when the Gosport Ferry Company ordered two boats from Edwards and Co. of London, the Verdi and Varos. The keel and frames of the Varos were completed when the 1st World War broke out in 1914 and building was stopped to allow naval work to be done. At the end of hostilities in 1918 the work was restarted and in 1919 she was completed. She was used on the Gosport to Portsmouth passenger ferry service until 1939 when she was requisitioned by the navy as a harbour interception vessel in the Solent approaches. After the war she went back on the ferry service until 1956 when she was sold to Favourite Boats (now Blue Funnel Steamers) of Southampton for harbour trips.
