Construction is on the heavy side, to achieve a scale waterline without additional ballast. First cut and assemble keel complete with stern tube, then cut formers and assemble to keel. While this is drying cut stringers from 1/4 in. ply, hardwood bow block, mast and boom from spruce, etc. Cut the wheelhouse panels from 1/8 in. ply, glue up and leave to dry

CRAYFISH are one of New Zealand's biggest export earners – the total catch in 1969 was some 175,000 cwt., of which about a third was landed by the South Island ports. The common crayfish (jasus lalandei) is like a lobster but without the large nippers; it grows to about 18 in. and lives down to around 30 fathoms on rocky coasts and 60 fathoms offshore. Its colour varies from reddish purple to reddish orange and the body and tail are covered with short sharp spines. It is abundant throughout N.Z. and is also found in cool Australian and South African waters.
