DURING the Second World War the United States undertook a massive shipbuilding programme to supply both her allies and own needs. Ships of all types, merchant and warships, were virtually mass‑produced in a manner the likes of which we may never see again. Since speed of construction was of paramount importance these designs were standardized as far as possible. Vessels produced under these conditions generally had a simple straightforward appearance unlike the often fussy and complex con temporary foreign designs. Such functionalism may not appeal to all eyes but they can form the basis of easily built models that still capture the character of the full size vessels.
The Hibbard, a fictitious name I confess, is based upon the Rudderow class of Destroyer Escorts. They were modifications of the previous Buckley class in which the 3in.guns were replaced with two 5in. guns in single mounts. This armament combined with three torpedo tubes gave them the appearance and punch of a bantam destroyer. In 1945 some vessels had the AA removed and replaced with six extra 40mm AA guns; this model represents such a modification.
Numerous units of this class were converted to fast transports (APD designation in the US Navy) whilst building. They would carry landing craft on large davits to meet the supply needs of the Pacific 'Island Hopping' campaign. Others had large radars installed for duties as fleet radar pickets, the first line of defence against air attack. So, if you fancy something a little different then this design offers plenty of scope for individual tastes.
