BY NORMAN A. OUGH

The official drawing is of a 50 ft. steam boat used for harbour service, but the corrections for a capital ship's picket boat have been added from the author's collection of photographs. For more than half a century battleships carried two of them, and, in the case of a flagship a third 45 ft. long, with a counter stern as the admiral's barge. As the specification book is gone it is not possible to state the power developed by the twin-cylinder compound reciprocating engine or what speed it gave, but the picket boats always produced an impression of power and speed on their journeys in charge of a midshipman among the anchored battleships and to the shore, Before about 1908 they were of similar form but of a length of 56 ft. with twin funnels
