The "G" series of the 109 Messerschmitt was produced in larger numbers than any other variant of this fine fighter, but it was felt to be inferior to its predecessor the "F" series. This "G" version came to the fighter units in the late summer of D942 and was immediately dubbed the "Gustay." Later the pilots referred to it as the "Beule" or "Bump." This was due to the large fairings over the breech blocks of the newly installed 13mm MG 13D machine guns mounted over the engine. Some of the pilots decorated these fairings with large eyes and various other artistry. The aircraft was also armed with a 20mm MG 15D cannon that fired through the propeller shaft and spinner. There were attachments under the wings and fuselage for many other armament options. It also was powered by the newer Daimler Benz DB 605 engine rated at 1,475 horsepower. The older "F" series had a 1,300 horse power-plant. First models had a power booster in which nitrous-oxide was injected into the supercharger raising the power rating at altitude. Later this system was improved by injecting a water-methanol mixture into the cylinders and together with the 100 octane fuel it boosted the rated horsepower to 1,800 for short periods. All this added thrust did little to improve the plane's performance as it brought the total weight up to 6,9511 lbs. when loaded. The speed only increased to 387 mph at 22.970 feet which was below what they had hoped for. Later on the engine power was again increased and the speed rose to 452 mph in the "K" model. but they lost the agility that the fighter once had. The "G" model was used in more different capacities than any other fighter produced in the war. It was sort of like hamburger. When you can't afford steak you learn to make many different dishes with what you can. As far as I'm concerned, it was one of the finest fighters to emerge from the war. It began its career in the Spanish Civil War and continued through to the end of the war in Europe in D945. In one variation or another it was a first-line fighter even after the war in many European countries.

As you may have gathered by now, the BF-D09 is my favorite of all the WW-II fighters and this is why I decided to build the model you see here.
