Our model of a deep-sea diver requires very little skill and uses easily obtainable material. Any youngster nine years old and over can complete the project alone, but the younger modelers need only slight supervision and guidance.

Our diver operates just like the real thing. When air enters the diving suit, it rises; when the air is permitted to escape, it begins to descent. Deep sea divers do not carry their own air as do skin divers. Air is pumped down to them via a flexible hose and the diver controls his ascent and descent by tapping a valve on the inside of his helmet with his head to release the correct amount of air which will control his depth. The more air that he releases, the deeper he sinks.

The model also is fitted with an air hose. The model will normally fill with water and sink with the air escaping through the hose. However, when you blow into the tubing, the air will force the water out through the holes in the bottom and the diver will rise. By controlling the amount of air you blow into the tube, you can keep the diver at any depth you choose. Merely keeping your tongue on the hose opening will also keep the diver at a steady level.

Basic materials consist of a ping pong ball, frozen concentrate juice can, plastic tubing, block of wood from a crate, and some dowel for arms and legs.
