This article and set of plans is a combined effort by Charlie Pottol and myself to give model boaters a model that takes advantage of the new K&B 3.5 Outboard. Charlie first started designing and running outboard tunnel hulls back in 1972 while he was preparing to attend the Hawaiian I nvitat ional Model Boat Regatta. At that time, the only model outboard engine available was the Fugi 15. While it had scale appearance, it lacked greatly in the power department. With the exception of Jay Selby, the "Father of R/C Outboards,' most of us had given lip on model outboarding because of the lack of a suitable power source, John E. Brodbeck and the Folks down at the K&B Manufacturing plant in Downey, California converted a big group of us this past fall when he released the K&B 3.5 Outboard. Charlie Pottol was among the first to receive a new 3.5 Outboard-he immediately bolted it onto the Klampon Kai he had used back in '72. As Charlie tells it, "I started the engine released the boat and as soon as I increased the throttle, the boat did a torque roll, It was back to the drawing board." The Klampon Kai IV reflects an increase in length as well as beam over the original hull. Charlie would be the first to admit that it probably Isn't " going to win many standoff scale awards. However, Charlie designed the boat for fast and easy building and scale-like appearance wasn't one of his primary concerns. If you're looking for a fast building boat to tryout the new K&B 3.5 Outboard, then Klampon Kai IV might just he your answer.
