DENNY TYPE STEAM GUNBOAT
SCALE 1:48 1/4"=1ft LENGTH. 36" Beam 5 7/8" Electric RADIO CONTROL
IN coastal forces, silence and sea keeping ability are factors which can be of considerable Importance, and the Denny type Steam Gunboat was produced with these points in mind. Instead of an unsilenced i.c. engine, a particularly quiet steam unit was fitted, and the hull was of soft round bilge form against the chine or hard-bilged shapes of many M.G.B.s and M.T.B.s. Unfortunately, it was steel-built, and thus construction was at the expense of destroyers, etc., and it also proved vulnerable to even light gunfire, especially in the region of the steam machinery. Increasing the armour protection raised displacement from 165 tons to 260, and dropped the speed from 351/2 to 30 knots.
Some sixty of these craft were proposed, but only nine were ordered and only seven completed. Of the seven, H.M.S. Grey Goose achieved the greatest fame, since she was converted by Vespers to an experimental gas-turbine power plant some dozen years ago 'and used to evaluate this form of propulsion.
The details of tl«. design were l.o.a. 145 ft. 3 in., b.p, 137 ft. 9 in., beam 20 ft., draught 5 ..5 ft 6 in. (at 165 tons). Two-shaft geared turbines were fitted and the operational crew was 34.
