Early in 1959 it was decided that something was needed to stimulate free flight in our area. We had found that although many boys were interested in free flight too few were actually flying. It was therefore decided to initiate a free flight training program in the local club, The Hawks Flying Club of Sierra Vista, Arizona. This training program would teach boys both young and old the principles of free flight by starting a simple, easy to build model and progressing until the student was flying
contest-type free flights. Basically, the program sounded good but problems arose in that few free flight kits available at that time readily suited this program and few were designed for the new weight rules. It was then decided to design and develop a series of free flights which would start with a basic trainer and end up with a contest-type ship. This series consisted of three planes. The first was a basic
trainer .020 free flight. The second was a "basic" 1/2 A-A free flight and the third
was a contest-type 1/2 A-A. In this article the 1/2 A-A basic contest free flight is presented. The design of the basic free flight PULQUE (Pulque is a firey Mexican drink, pronounced "Pool-key") started with an extensive study of exactly what was needed in a basic flight trainer
