by SAL TAIBI ...
The Starbuster was designed for Mike Taibi, who at the age of four, expressed a desire to build a model airplane There are countless number of fathers throughout the country who are in the same position as I was at the time.
At the age of two their son will start spending considerable time with dad in the workshop and will then start needling him. "When am I going to build a model?" The fact that they cannot read, or cannot trim a leading edge, seems to pose no problem for them but it is enough to convince dad they need the very simplest type of model to build if they are to have any success at all. The Starbuster was designed with these goals in mind, therefore the wing was designed sparless, the leading edges were laid flat so that only the minimum sanding is required to shape the leading edge, the wing dihedral joint is butt cemented. The result is a simple easy model that is forgiving if junior goofs, trims out easily and yet has contest capabilities with a good powerplant. It can be flown with anything from an old Wasp .049 to a present day contest engine. We thermalled the original model on the third flight and if it hadn't been my, practice to always fuse a model, it would undoubtedly have been lost. The Starbuster has been flown practically every Sunday for the past two years
