  ALTHOUGH I had no Suitable hull available at the time I bought a 3/4 h.p. O.R. Mk. I engine, it seemed a most useful unit to have. It stayed in my workshop for many months before any move was made to provide it with a hull. Ideas were set in motion by the occasional articles on American built hydroplanes appearing in model magazines, so at last the drawing board and paper were brought out.

  Having watched Bluebird many times on Ullswater and Coniston I decided to follow this design rather than the 'slipper' type hydroplanes used by the Americans in their contests and high speed attempts. This design held Much more of a challenge for me, as, apart from tethered models and Bluebird I had never seen or heard of any radio controlled models based on this design. I was somewhat dubious of its ultimate performance as I had the feeling that surely someone must have tried it, and it had not worked. The desire to find out for myself spurred me on all the more.

   The next decision was method of construction. The prototype was built as follows. The full Size plan was drawn out on a piece of 1/2 in. resin bonded plywood then cut out to shape, followed by fretting out the sponsons, sponson spars and the main hull for lightness and at the same time providing the access compartments in the hull.

  The boat was then built upside down, bulkheads and stringers fitted in the usual way and skinned with I / 16 in. marine ply. A stand was made and the hull turned right way up. Balsa blocks were then glued to the top of the sponsons and the main hull and sanded to streamline shape. The engine was next installed,
