I do not know about you, but the reasons why my models are built can be many and varied. With scale types of model, the history of a real vessel might be enough to make it a 'must build' subject. It's also not unknown for the appearance of the full size craft, which can range from being just attractive to dripping with character, to be the trigger for a model's construction.
With functional models the initial impetus can come from an idea that just has to be tried out. This is especially potent if it means that you can achieve performance at modest cost rather than the alternative of guaranteeing success through expensive purchases or brute force. In the back of my mind is the truism that 'An engineer is someone who can make for a shilling (5p) what any fool can make for a pound', a quote taken from Neville Shute's 'Trustee from the Toolroom'
