By P.N. Thomas

The St. Elmo was built in 1914 by Cook, Welton and Gemmell, well-known builders of trawlers, at their yard at Beverley, for the St. Andrews Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. of Hull. Her registered dimensions were 136.3 ft. x 23.5 ft. x 10.9 ft. and her gross tonnage was 314 tons. Her service speed was about 11 knots. Loaded with 210 tons of coal and 45 tons of ice and sundry stores she had a draught aft of 15 ft. 9 in. As she steamed to the fishing grounds the weight of coal and stores reduced, as she fished her draught increased again, and as she steamed home she became lighter as the remaining coal and stores were consumed. The state of trim of a trawler was forever changing and her worst condition was after her first trawl when she had used up about one third of her coal and had several tons of fish in the pounds on her deck.

She is representative of the medium sized trawler which changed little in design until the introduction of the diesel engine. At a scale of 1/4 in. = 1 ft. the model will be 36 1/2 in. long x 5 3/4 in. beam and with an average draught of 21 in. would have a displacement of 13.8 lbs. (This figure was calculated by the method described in the May issue). The St. Elmo was hired by the Navy in 1915 and fitted with a 12 pdr. gun. She was returned to her owners in 1919.
