ORIGINALLY this vessel was to have been built as a Drifter/Trawler 'on spec' by Messrs Fellows & Co of Yarmouth in the early thirties. Trinity House took an interest in her as they were looking for a replacement for their older vessel Vigilant. After negotiations with the builders, Trinity House purchased the hull whilst still on the stocks and the original specification was revised to suit the requirements of the Pilotage Service.
By the time she was completed little resemblance remained to a Drifter/Trawler layout. About the only thing that showed her ancestry was in her hull lines, being typical fishing vessel in sheer, shape and size. Two vessels had already been completed to the same draught lines, the first being laid down in 1918 and was to have been named as HMD Skyline (Yard No. 296). It appears that she would have been a Non Standard Admiralty Drifter as her main dimensions of 92ft 0 in BP, Beam (moulded) 20ft 0 in and Depth (moulded) of 10ft 0 in did not compare with the dimensions of standard vessels (86ft 0 in. x 18ft 6in x 10ft 0 in).
