Our model is based on a craft built by the old-established British firm of John A. Thornycroft "Sung a Marutham" is a sleek looking craft which is in regular use by the Customs and Excise Service of Ceylon. Its 58-foot hull is urged along at a top speed of some 20 knots (25 m.p.h.) by twin Thornycroft eight-cylinder diesels each developing 275 b.p.h. at 2300 r.p.m. Power is fed to the twin screws through a 2:1 gear reduction unit. The craft is a hard chine type (sharpie) and the prototype's skin is made by double diagonal planking among the equipment on board is a full radar outfit used for night or bad weather interception of shipping. Sporting a royal blue and maroon color scheme, the craft is a handsome and smart addition to any modeller's fleet.
The material was a prime consideration during design. For greatest efficiency and longest life, plywood construction is favoured. Since this material is not always easy to find we decided to show construction in balsa. The model in the pictures was a balsa job and built by M. Purday. It is powered by an English E.D .12 diesel and is operated by a pulse radio giving proportional rudder control. Any power plant up to .19 is suitable and we suggest .074 as a minimum.
