Hull Construction

The basic hull is very simple to construct — it consisted of two pieces of 3/8in. ply, the front piece tapered for the bow and the rear piece, these two glued together as shown. The sides were then cut out of 3/8in. ply, both the same from the stern edge to the point the bow taper starts and the nearly square transom, these were then glued to the bottom

   Having drawn a very rough plan, mine had a square bow and a ramp rather than the more shipshape bow with opening doors like the model in the book, I then looked to improve the plan. Before another plan was drawn I thought a tank landing craft will need some tanks, so I looked around and bought a `Bandia' kit of a Sherman tank at 1/48 scale. I thought this would be ideal, as it would give me a model of the same scale as my trawler. Over two or three evenings I built my tank kit (I was very impressed with how good these kits are now, as it is a few years since I last built a plastic kit). I now had a 1/4 in. to 1ft tank, so I proceeded to re-draw the plan using the size of the tank to determine the beam of the craft, and I decided to make the tank deck capable of holding three vehicles and have a stern section about a quarter of the total length This gives a model of 31in., a little on the short side, but all in all a landing craft is something unusual and this model was to be something simple, to only take a few months to build before I started my next model — a minesweeper which will take 12-18 months to build. The only other real problem, other than the dimensions of the length and beam, was the draught, as these craft were flat bottomed and had a very shallow draught. I had to increase it to allow for the power plant, an Orbit 705 motor and a lead acid battery, and the tank is made to sit right on top of these. The increase was of lin. to give a total draught max of 21/4in.; this would also, I hoped, increase the stability. I calculated that the displacement would be about 71/2 lbs. I then purchased the other two vehicle kits, these being a machine gun half-track and a 155mm motor gun. I thought three vehicles the same would be boring to look at and build. The kits also contained 14 figures which at the time I showed no interest in, but later used, I think, to good effect.
