THIS drawing illustrates a type of craft once well known on the Clyde and West Highland coast, but like so many picturesque types of ships they are now fast disappearing. The Skylight was part of the fleet of Ross and Marshall Ltd. of Greenock, owners of a good number of steam puffers, but in the last year or so they have added modern diesel-driven craft to their fleet, and sold most of their steam-driven puffers.
The plans of the Skylight illustrate the difference between the old and the new – one of the modern `Puffers'. the Skylight will appeal to many modelmakers and the model lends itself particularly well to the installation of motors and control gear, as ample space is afforded by the beamy full-ended hull.
The method of construction follows that used model makers familiar with bread and butter construction should find the method no problem. Basically, the hull consists of a bottom piece with bow and stern made from laminated blocks, the sides being formed by planks fitting in rebates cut in bow and stern blocks.
