By Phil Cartier

Combat requires a bit of luck, a lot of skill, and quick reflexes. My son, Alan, used all three to win the Nats in 1998 with this plane‑a bunch of kills, a couple of airtime wins courtesy of the pit crew, one loss, and no midairs makes for a very successful performance. The Gotcha Pbycho did its part, keeping up very well with the Nelsonpowered planes and outflying most of the ready-to‑fly planes. Combat planes look much alike in the air, but the Psycho has lots of state‑of‑the art features that help it outperform older designs like the Gotcha 500

The design features come under three headings aerodynamics, structure, and building methods, which all interact. Aerodynamically, we finally went with the popular rounded wing tips. Most importantly, after building a couple of test planes I was able to document about a 2 mph improvement in airspeed, probably due to decreased drag. It amounted to.2‑.3 seconds in a seven‑lap half mile speed run.
