By James Pottinger
With the advent of suitable inboard engines, much small rowing and former sailing boats built to this traditional Shetland shape and the construction methods were gradually modified so as to take advantage of installed motive power by raising the hull's freeboard with a few additional planks and perhaps adding an enclosed forecastle with windscreen, or an enclosed steering position. A number of traditional types were thus converted or even designed from the outset incorporating the characteristics features of a long tradition. Inevitably the progression was to build boats with much fuller lines and beam than hitherto intended for sail only.
