boats were also of a box construction based on the type of aircraft fuselage pioneered by Col. Bowden. The method was to cut out of sheet ply the bottom and sides, glueing all longerons, etc., in place on these parts before being assembled. The transom and main bulkhead were then glued to the bottom and the sides fixed in place, forming an accurate box structure. It was then a simple matter to pull in the sides at the bows and bend up the bottom. To assist bending, the ply for the bottom and sides was cross-grained. The balsa sponsons were then added and carved to shape. I believe that balsa is the best material for bows for although it will become mashed up on rapid contact with a solid bank, it does absorb the shock and prevent other damage. Considering the safety angle, if the bows are built of balsa we have proved (on too many occasions) that these models will never jump out of a lake with concrete sides. This feature has saved many otherwise mangled propellers and shafts.
