Lonabrak
By By James Pottinger
Lonabrak was designed by the Macduff Ship Design Company and built at their shipyard for Scottish Sea Farms (SSF) who are based in the Shetland Islands. This workboat is 12.44 metres long with a 6 metre beam, and has conventional twin propeller drive from two Mermaid Minstral 160 HP engines running at 2500 rpm. The model plans have been drawn from illustrations on the Macduff website and some drawings provided by SSF, plus observations and sightings of the prototype Model
Whilst an initial impression might be of a complicated model construction process, in fact it will be little different from a traditionally shaped mono-hull. Most model builders will have their own preferred method of building, but my preference would be to cut to shape the inside backbone profiles and then temporally pin them together and lay them upside down on an already prepared full-hull width deck shape, with suitable packing under the after section of the main deck to ensure all is level, enabling a firm base from which to build. As the inner faces of each hull are basically 100% flat, after setting up the frames, the outer sides of each hull can be planked up to deck level in the same manner as a mono-
