OF ALL the battleships to have served with the Royal Navy in the last hundred years, HMS Warspite can justly claim to have seen more fighting action than any other.
She was the last of five units of the Queen Elizabeth class; these ships were the first in the world to have their main armament in a superimposed arrangement, later to become common to all large surface units. When they were launched they were the largest battleships in the world, and mounted the first twin 15in guns on a warship. These mounts were so successful that when after the second world war the new battleship Vanguard was being designed, the same guns and mountings were used for her.
