THE first time I ever saw one of these vessels was in the Normandy port of Port au Bessin in 1944. That particular vessel was undergoing repairs after one of our fighters had given her a going over. I was struck by her unusual superstructure and absence of fussy detail on the deck.
Recently, thinking about a simple prototype for a boat, I started to search for photographs and other details, and the model shown here is the result. Among other interesting information which emerged during the search was the fact that these boats fish in pairs and travel astern, with the nets flung over the bows!
The prototype is built in balsa throughout, and planked in 3/32 in. on 1/4 in. frames and keel. The deck is also planked on and the superstructure is removable, as well as the hatch forward of the wheelhouse to give access to batteries and motor. By using 3 instead of 6 volts, which would still give ample power, I believe there would be room for radio-control installation. She could quite easily be built " bread and butter " fashion, but as the original was, I believe, of wooden planked construction, I preferred to do it that way rather than imitate planks.
Thank you for looking
