By M. A. Hundleby

In 1928 the German-s began the first of a new type of capital ship designed for commerce raiding and followed it in 1931 by another and in 1932 by a third. They were the armoured ships Deutschland, Admiral Scheer and Admiral Graf Spee. All had welded steel hulls and diesel engines while the armament was unusual for 11,000 ton ships, being six 11 in. guns in two triple turrets. These "pocket battleships as they came to be called, could run away from anything which could sink them and out- gun any ship catch could catch them.
